Botanical name – Lagineria vulgaris Synonyms –Lagineria siceraria

Local name –Tumri, Tumdi, तुमड़ी

Hindi Name –  तुम्बी ,  घड़ा गर्दन की लौकी , कडुवी लौकी

Sanskrit Name – Tumbani, Katu Tumbi

Economic benefits – Ayurveda medicines referred in  Charak Samhita as cough, useful in heart problem, useful for pregnant women, if not bitter useful for vegetables. Containers were common in Uttarakhand before plastic revolution.

                   Myths, Religious Importance and Traditions

        The Nath priest use Tumri, Tumdi or pitecher neck bottle gourd for making Ektara or Tumbi a one sting musical instrument.

                     Seeds for Children Garland

 People put a garland on orphan age child neck. There are many materials on such garland as the purified tiger nails, ajwain /ajowan  thaili (small bag of purified ajowan seeds) and purified seeds of Tumdi/Tumri.

   Use in  Thief Catching Tantric-Mantric Ritual

 In past Tumri/Tumdi तुमड़ी मंत्र, was performed by Tantric-Mantric for catching the thief in case of theft. The ritual performer or Tantric used to catch Tumri /Tumdi by a tag and used to recite following Mantra or other Mantras. Tumri/Tumdi  used to walk and used to reach at thief place. (It was a perception perhaps).  People call that Tantric ritual as Tumdi Chalana.

माता पिता गुरु देवता को आदेस

काली काली महाकाली, अघोर काली

ब्रह्मा कि बेटि, राजा इन्द्र की शाली

इन्द्र शान से बजावे ताली

क्या क्या करन्तो आयी

आप काली भस्मन्ती आइ ,

पर लोह की कील उखेल्न्ती आइ

आप चौकी उखेलन्ती आइ

पर चौकी उठालन्ती आइ

मेरा चोर पकड़ी नी लाइता नौ नौरतों की पूजा नी पाई

काली कुखडी मंद की घाट ट्ज देखो

तेरा अवतार आपकी चौकी करनी लाइ

तो आगे जादू पीछे घाऊ, माता चंदीका की दूधि दंता लाइ

अपना गुरु का मांश  खाई

मेरा गुरु की दुआई
