                 Ghazal is a poetic form of couplet and a refrain, each line sharing same meter. In India, Persian Ghazals influenced Urdu poets for making Ghazal popular in India. Dusyant Kumar a renowned Hindi Ghazal maker influenced Garhwali poets for creating Ghazals (Netra Singh Aswal in phone conversation).

         Ghazal is one of the important poetry styles in India among Indian languages

    There are Ghazal makers in every Indian language.  As far as Garhwali language is concerned famous Ghazal maker Netra Singh Aswal states (on phone on 28/12/2016) that first modern Garhwali Drama playwright Bhavani Datt Thapliyal used Ghazal style in his drama ‘Bhakt Prahlad’. Aswal also informed that Kanhaiyalal Dandriyal also created Ghazals but Dandriyal never claimed that those poems are Ghazal. Renowned critic Virendra Panwar informed (on phone on 28/12/2016) that there are couples of Ghazals in Bhajan Singh’s poetry collection. Bhajan Singh ‘Singh’ never claimed those couplets as Ghazals.

 However, authentically, Netra Singh Aswal is called the initiator of Ghazal in Garhwali (1988). Later on, many Garhwali creative started creating Ghazals in Garhwali.

   Harbi-Harbi by Madhusudan Thapliyal is the first Ghazal collection.

 The subjects of all Ghazals are related to Garhwal, nature, society, politics, changing times, culture, new culture, administration, development soil, question of capital for Uttarakhand, love, paradoxes in society and administration, water and environment. Virendra Panwar states “The writer not only watches every movement in Garhwal but experiences them too. The Ghazals of Madhusudan are related to roots of Garhwal and Garhwalis.

  Virendra Panwar further states in his book ‘Been’ about ‘Harbi-Harbi’ by Madhusudan that every Ghazal fits at the parameter of Ghazal.

डाँडो उपजै तुमन बाटा कोलतार का

सैरु पौंछि गैनि हमरा गौं गुठ्यार का

 Madhusudan also creates satirical Ghazals for attacking on wrong happenings.

दुनिया भर को चंट चकड़ेत हरामी

अफु तैं सल्ली मानि हम तैं लाटु चिताणु .

  Ghazal means express larger aspect in small numbers of words and Thapliyal fulfills that requirement as –

एक भूख एक र्वटी एक साग

एक धर्ति एक पाणी एक आग .

  As Critics appreciate the Ghazal makers as Sophia Parnok (Russian Ghazal maker), Friedrich Rucket (German Ghazal maker), August von Platen (German Ghazal maker), Motiram Bhatta (English Ghazal maker), English Ghazal makers as James C. Mangan, James c. Flecker, Adrienne Rich, Phyllis Webb, John Hollander, W.S Merwin, Elis Paschen, Robert Bly, Rob Winger, E.Wilner, Critics appreciate Madhusudan Thapliyal for promoting Ghazal genre in Garhwali language by publishing First Ghazal Collection.
