History Review of Bharat Kavi Bahuguna the Court Poet of Garhwal King Manshah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -110

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -356

ByBhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

In the court of Garhwal King Manshah, Bharat Bahuguna was Sanskrit poet and astrologer. Bharat Bahuguna was born in Pokhari , Chalansyun, Devalgarh Pargana, Pauri Garhwal. His father name was Ram Ji.
Bharat Bahuguna created a Sanskrit ‘Manodaya Kavya’. Only four parts of ‘Manodaya Kavya’ are available. Medhkar Shastri Bahuguna copied ‘Manodaya Kavya’ in 1782. Shambhu Prasad bahguna published ‘Manodaya Kavya’ in his Virat Hridaya book.
‘Manodaya Kavya’ is a not long poetry book but is gracious from literature point of view. Poet Bharat Bahuguna describes the battle of Painkhand very effectively. There are ample uses of figure of speeches especially for praising Garhwal King Manshah and his predecessors. The poetries also reflect History of Garhwal. There are effects of Kalidas on the poetries.
                       Bharat Bahuguna as Astrologer

There are mentions of Jyotikray in Akbarnama and Jahangir Nama. Bahugun-Banshcharit (1991) states that Buddhi Vilash Bahguna went to see Akbar and he made Janmaptri of Akbar and got title of Jytikhray.
Bahguna-Vanshcharit also states that Bharat Kavi went to see Janhagir and got title of Jyotishray.
Tajuk Janhagiri and Jahangirnama describe the astrological knowledge of Jyotishray. Jahangir, twice, also rewarded Jyotishray by cash. Jahangirnama describes about Jyotishray in the year 1622. It means, Bharat Bahuguna or Jyotishray created Manodaya Kavya before 1622.
