Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -71

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

(Translated and interpreted from Kukreti Vanshavali by Chakradhar Kukreti (Gweel), 2007,)

There are many community stories told about the bravery of Vrishi Ji Kukreti in Jaspur and Gweel (Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal) (Please refer previous chapter too).
One of community stories about brave Vrishi Ji Kukreti of Jaspur is as under.
Vrishi Ji was rebellion and he stopped paying tax to the Shrinagar King. Shrinagar King sent his soldiers to catch Vrishi Ji and take him to Shrinagar court. The soldiers brought a rope with them to tie Vrishi Ji. Soldiers reached to village. Soldiers asked about Vrishi Ji. The villagers informed that Vrishi Ji is in Goth at region below the village (Ganvk Taul).
Eight –ten Kingdom Soldiers reached to Goath one mile below the village. Vrishi Ji had a big herd of goats. He just opened goats from Tandala (a long rope through which eight -ten or more goats are tied in Gaushala or Goath). Vrishi Ji saw that solders had a rope in bag and understood that soldiers had come to tie him. Vrishi Ji was carrying Tandala in his hand. He requested Kingdom soldiers to rest below a huge Khadik tree. Soldiers sat under Khadik tree and suddenly Vrishi Ji changed his instance in speed and tied all soldiers around the Khadik tree by his Tandala. Vrishi Ji took the rope from soldiers and tied them by that rope too. Vrishi Ji kept those solders tied on Khadik tree for hours.  Soldiers requested Vrishi Ji to untie them. Soldiers promised Vrishi Ji that they would not take Vrishi Ji to Shrinagar. Vrishi Ji untied all the soldiers. Soldiers went to Shrinagar without taking Vrishi Ji.
The place is now called Ghyar because here, soldiers surrounded Vrishi Ji and Vrishi Ji surrounded soldiers. Ghyar means to beseize or surround.
