Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -73

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

( Taken from Dr Khyat Singh Chauhan,2005, Uttam Parytan Sthal Tadasar, Shialvani, Kotdwara )
Tadasar (Tadkeshwar, Tadashwar) Mahadev Temple is an old Shiva temple. The said temple is called Jeevit Teerth or effective temple. Tadasar temple is in Bichhla Badalpur, Talla Salan, Lansdowne block, Pauri Garhwal. Tadasar is 74 KM far away from Kotdwara. People worship Tadasar Nag as Lord Shiva in this temple.
However, the specialty of Tadasar temple is that Aswal person, Sal leave (Shorea robusta) and oil or oil cooked food (Telansh) is not allowed into the temple. The folk story is as under –
Badalpur Garh or Rajgarhi (Fort) was built to defend the attack from Bijnor region. This is also called Rikhanikhal Garh and ruins are still there. Tadkeshwar was a temple for Rajgarhi. The chieftain of Rikhanikhal Garhi had immense belief on Tadasar. Tadasar is called a Buldan or Dhawadya Divta (the deity that calls, cautions or informs). At need, Tadasar deity used to call the Rikhanikhal Raja.
In Kalagarh region, there was an Aswal chieftain. Aswal worshipped Dhari devta (related to Katyuri). Once, a opposite Chieftain and Aswal chieftain planned to attack Rikhanikhal Garh chieftain. Aswal Chieftain knew that Tadasar deity would call Rikhanikhal Chieftain about the attack. Tadasar deity always used to call Rikhanikhal Garhi chieftain about misfortune or adversary in advance.  Aswal Chieftain thought to weaken the power of Dhawadya Divta Tadasar. Aswal ruler went into the temple with Hot Halva, oil on Sal tree and pasted the Idol by oil and hot Halva. Aswal chieftain thought that by this trick, Dhawadya Divta that is Tadasar deity would not call Rikhanikhal ruler. However, Tadasar deity informed Rikhanikhal ruler about the planning of Aswal chieftain and other chieftain.
From that very day, entry of any Aswal, Sal leave and oil are prohibited into temple compound.
