मकई का मूलस्थान मैक्सिको को का बालसास नदी तट  है. टियोसिंटे घास के विकास से मकई का करीब 9 000 साल पहले मैक्सिको   क्षेत्र में कृषिकरण हुआ   ।
चूंकि मकई का जलवायु अनुकूलन सरल है , मकई  भूमि की आवश्यकता कम ही पडती है इसलिए सम्पूर्ण अमेरिका व कैरिबियन क्षेत्र में मकई /मुंगरी एक विशेष व महत्वपूर्ण अनाज  है। माया  संस्कृति में मकई /मुंगरी देव तुल्य है।  पशिम अफ्रीका ने  2000  पहले मैक्षिको से या इस क्षेत्र से  मकई कृषि जान ली थी। 

यूरोप में सन 1515 -1517 की जिवोवानी की पेंटिंग से पता चलता है कि यहाँ मकई  पंहुच चुकी थी। वैज्ञानिक जैसे सी रिबौर्ग भी मानते हैं कि कोलम्बस मकई को 1493 सन में वेस्ट इंडीज से स्पेन लाया। 

भारत व एसिया में मकई कोलम्बस अमेरिका अन्वेषण से पहले से थी या कोलम्बस -अमेरिका अन्वेषण के पश्चात् मकई का प्रवेश भारत में हुआ पर अभी भी विवाद है। 

किन्तु सर्व जन सम्मत विचार है कि करीब सोलहवीं सदी में स्पेनी और पुर्तगाली व्यापारियों द्वारा मकई श्री लंका , दक्षिण भारत व बंगलादेश के तटों पर पंहुची। मक्का /मकई /मुंगरी के खेती का प्रसार अठारवीं सदी व में उनीसवीं सदी में हुआ।  मक्का शब्द अरबी शब्द है जो मक्का के नाम से निकला है। 

इस तरह उत्तराखंड में मक्का /मकई /मुंगरी सोलहवीं सदी अंत या सत्रहवीं सदी के प्राम्भ  में ही पंहुची होगी।  अनुकूलन का समय व उस समय के कृषि प्रचार प्रसार की स्थितियों पर नजर मारें तो कह सकते हैं कि वास्तव में उत्तराखंड की पहाड़ियों में अंग्रेजी शासन के बाद ही सही माने में मकई /मक्का /मुंगरी कृषि विकास हुआ होगा और मक्का /मकई /मुंगरी इस तरह का अन्न  हो गया कि कोई उत्तराखंडी सोच नही सकता कि मकई /मक्का /मुंगरी का मूलस्थान उत्तराखंड  भारत नही है और मक्का /मकई /मुंगरी अनाज उत्तराखंड के लिए नवीनतम अनाजों में से एक अनाज है।
